From Curiosity to Cash: My Automated Finance Tool Experiment

Recently, I went down a deep rabbit hole trying to figure out if I was actually on track financially. The more I looked at national averages, the more useless they felt. Why? Because a 30-year-old in a tech hub and a 30-year-old in a rural area are essentially playing two completely different games.

To solve this, I spent nights and weekends building a tool that pulls data from official government datasets — like the Census and BLS — to provide a much more granular view of where someone actually stands.

The Passive Income Goal

The plan is to see if this tool can become a sustainable digital product with minimal hands-on work. Here’s how it’s set up:

  • The Tool: A simple website offering free instant percentile rankings.
  • The Product: A comprehensive “Deep Dive” report that is automatically generated and delivered for download, providing additional insights and actionable advice.
  • The Goal: A zero-touch system where the data updates once a year and the sales flow runs entirely hands-off.

Freemium vs Ad-Supported Models

Currently, I’m experimenting with a Freemium approach:

  • Free: Basic stats for instant insight.
  • Paid: Deep-dive report for more detailed analysis and guidance.

For digital product creators: does this convert better than a fully ad-supported model? Or are users more likely to pay for something that feels trusted, even if free options exist elsewhere?

Trust Barriers

One concern is trust. I’m a solo developer, not a major financial institution. Will users trust a paid data report enough to actually buy it?

Pricing is on the lower end for the level of insight provided, but perception matters — especially in financial products. Finding the right balance between price and credibility is key.

Growth Strategy for Passive Scale

If the goal is to grow this without working 40 hours a week, where should the focus be?

A few ideas I’m considering:

  • Improve SEO and organic discovery, so users find the tool without paid marketing.
  • Build referral incentives for users to share insights with friends.
  • Automate email onboarding and report delivery to minimize manual work.
  • Test social proof and testimonials to improve trust in the paid product.

The experiment is ongoing, but I’m excited to see if a solo-built, automated tool can genuinely work as a passive income source.
