“Passive” Income With Memes: How It Actually Works

I’ll start by saying this upfront:
I really don’t like the term passive income — because income is almost never truly passive.

That said, this felt like the right place to share a real, grounded business idea, so here’s my story.

The Setup: A Local Meme Page in Germany

I run a local meme page for a town in Bavaria, Germany.

  • Population: ~130,000
  • Page size: ~30,000 followers
  • Content:
    • City stereotypes
    • Jokes about nearby towns
    • Local events and happenings — all in meme form

It’s not a generic meme page.
It’s hyper-local.

Monetization Started Early (Without a System)

I started monetizing the page pretty early on — but without any real strategy.

At the time, I:

  • Promoted local parties occasionally
  • Posted sponsored memes here and there

I made around €3,000–€4,000 per year, which felt like a lot for an 18-year-old who just wanted to post memes and didn’t think of this as a business at all.

Fast Forward: €30,000+ in 2025

Fast forward to today.

In 2025 alone, I crossed €30,000 — just from making memes.

Same page.
Same city.
Just a better system.

How the Monetization Actually Works

The core monetization method is simple:
paid cooperations with local businesses.

Examples:

  • Sponsored memes for clubs or restaurants
  • Giveaways
  • Event promotions

The hard part wasn’t selling — it was raising awareness.

The Real Challenge: Education

At first, local businesses didn’t even know:

  • That meme pages could sell ads
  • That this kind of promotion works

So I emailed tons of local companies explaining:

  • What the page is
  • Who the audience is
  • What kind of exposure they’d get

Once enough businesses understood that this was an option, things changed.

That’s when it started feeling more “passive”.

Why It’s Easier Now

These days:

  • I still reach out to companies I want to work with
  • But much less than before

Some customers:

  • Come back regularly
  • Book promotions multiple times per year

Repeat customers reduce effort more than any automation tool ever will.

Delegating to Reduce Time Investment

To make things even more hands-off, I hired a friend:

  • €100–200 per month
  • Helps with memes
  • Helps with community management

This alone freed up a lot of mental space.

Other Revenue Paths (That I Didn’t Fully Pursue)

My main income is from paid cooperations.

However, some city meme pages make significantly more money by:

  • Selling merchandise
  • Running full online shops

At that level, it stops being a side project and starts looking like:

  • A real company
  • 3–4 employees
  • Inventory, logistics, customer support

I chose not to go that route (at least for now).

Time Commitment (Reality Check)

For the last 4 years, I’ve been:

  • Studying
  • Working ~20 hours per week

And still had enough time to run the page consistently.

This isn’t zero-effort — but it’s very manageable.

Final Thoughts

I’m genuinely curious how many people realize that:

  • Meme pages can be monetized
  • Especially local meme pages
  • Without spammy betting or crypto ads

You don’t need:

  • Millions of followers
  • Sketchy sponsors

You need:

  • A specific audience
  • Local relevance
  • Businesses that actually benefit from visibility

If you have questions about:

  • Starting a local meme page
  • Monetizing without selling out
  • Approaching local businesses

I’m happy to help.
