I Started Trend-Spotting as a Side Hustle — Here Are My Early Results

Why I Started Looking Beyond My 9–5

Like a lot of people here, I’ve been trying to build income outside of my 9–5.

Over the past couple of years, I tested a few different ideas. Some worked briefly, most didn’t. Recently though, I started leaning into something that’s been unexpectedly fun — helping creators and small brands catch trends early.

Not chasing virality.
Not guessing.

Just spotting what’s heating up before everyone jumps on it.

What I Mean by “Trend-Spotting”

Instead of guessing what might blow up on TikTok or Instagram Reels, I started using trend-spotting tools to see what was gaining traction early.

The idea is simple:

  • Identify trends before they peak
  • Turn them into content ideas
  • Let creators move faster than everyone else

That’s where the side hustle angle showed up.

How I Turned This Into Paid Work

I started small.

First, I helped a couple of friends who run Shopify stores. I gave them early trend ideas and helped shape short-form video concepts around those trends.

One of them saw their TikTok ad CTR double after switching to trend-based creatives.

That was my first real signal.

Selling Trend Reports to Creators

After that, I tested offering trend reports to creators.

For $50–$100, I’d send a simple breakdown:

  • 3 content ideas that are heating up
  • Why they’re gaining traction
  • How to adapt them to the creator’s niche

Nothing fancy — but people found it genuinely useful.

The best part? Some of the reports I made are still driving results weeks later, because trends don’t die overnight.

Testing My Own Faceless Accounts

I also experimented with running my own faceless accounts in a couple of trending niches.

It’s still early, but one account already hit 10k views in a week with zero ad spend. No pushing. Just riding momentum.

That’s when it really clicked for me.

Is This Passive? Not Yet — But It Compounds

This isn’t fully passive (at least not yet).

But once you spot a good niche, the content keeps working. The effort compounds over time instead of resetting every day, which is what makes this interesting long-term.

Right now, I’m still in the “early results” phase — but it’s one of the first side hustles where I can clearly see how it scales.

Curious What’s Working for Others Too

I’m still learning, testing, and refining — but this has been a solid start.

I’d love to hear what side hustles actually paid you this month as well. Always motivating to see what’s working for other people.
