How One Mug Made Me Believe in Print on Demand Again

When I Was Ready to Quit POD for Good

Last year, I was this close to quitting print on demand entirely.

I’d been running my store for months, spending more money than I was making, and it honestly felt like shouting into the void. No momentum. No consistency. Just effort with nothing to show for it.

I was already mentally preparing to shut everything down.

The One Order That Changed Everything

Then one day, completely out of nowhere, someone ordered a mug with one of my older designs.

At first, it didn’t feel like a big deal. Just another small order. But that one customer came back — and not just once. They ended up buying multiple mugs as holiday gifts for their entire family.

When I added it all up, the total sales from that single customer were close to $500.

That one order kept me in the game.

Why I Almost Missed This Opportunity

Here’s the ironic part.

I had basically stopped paying attention to mugs because I assumed everyone only wanted shirts and hoodies. Apparel felt like the “real” POD play, so mugs were an afterthought.

But Printful had quietly expanded their catalog and added some genuinely solid ceramic mugs with consistent print quality. I left the listing live without thinking much of it — mostly out of laziness.

That accidental decision ended up keeping my store alive.

How One Small Product Kept My Store Afloat

When I was ready to pull the plug, that mug was still selling.

Not exploding. Not going viral.
Just quietly converting.

It’s strange how a single, low-effort product can completely change your motivation. Seeing real customers, repeat orders, and genuine use cases reminded me why I started in the first place.

Why Mugs Are Now One of My Best Sellers

Fast forward to now, and mugs are one of my best-selling product types.

They’re simple, giftable, easy to understand, and people don’t overthink buying them. Looking back, I honestly don’t think I’d still be running this store if it weren’t for that one mug.

Sometimes it’s not the “big idea” that saves your side hustle — it’s the small, overlooked product that quietly works.

So I’m curious…

Have You Had a Small Product Save Your Store?

Has anyone else had a small product — something you almost ignored — end up carrying your entire store?

I’d love to hear those stories.
